We are seeking a Technical Writer/Editor with strong Arabic and English language skills, to join the Loss Prevention Department (LPD) at Saudi Aramco, based in our main headquarters in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Aramco is a fully integrated global petroleum enterprise and a world leader in exploration and production, refining, distribution, and petrochemicals. LPD provides safety services to customers and stakeholders, including corporate and executive management; Saudi Aramco operating, support, and project organizations; employees; the Saudi Arabian government; contractors; and members of the public. LPD has nine divisions – seven field divisions and two centralized technical support divisions.
The Technical Writer/Editor will be responsible for producing all types of articles for the assigned publications and for Loss Prevention booklets, brochures, and other special projects. This will involve writing and editing — in both English and Arabic — feature articles on operational safety, community projects, employee programs, and special interest items; editorial oversight of production; and ensuring the production and distribution of LPD periodicals and publications to meet LPD and Saudi Aramco standards. Arabic editing of work sent by other departments for technical review is also required.
As the successful candidate, you must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism or English from an accredited degree program.
You must have a minimum of 1 year of experience as an editor or writer with an institutional or commercial newspaper, magazine, publishing house or firm, corporate advertising agency, or similar. Alternatively, you must have completed an internship with a bilingual (English/Arabic) institution or commercial newspaper, magazine, publishing house or firm, corporate advertising agency, or similar.
You must demonstrate a high proficiency in written and spoken English and Arabic, particularly as related to the requirements of journalism following APA style and technical phraseology.
You must have some knowledge of the technical aspects of printing and production of a publication.
You must be perceptive in the handling of matters of a confidential nature.
Ideally, you must have some experience/knowledge within the oil industry or safety industry.
Duties & Responsibilities:
You are required to perform the following:
Edit news items, features, and columns written by staff or contributors, including: checking factual accuracy, ensuring copy conforms to the company editorial policy, checking all details of the editorial style for consistency with the relevant publication-style manual, and checking for correct tone for various audiences.
Write articles on major company operations and projects, or safety concerns highlighted by proponents and management, often consulting with subject matter specialists, conducting interviews, and researching subject matter, as necessary, to develop information in both English and Arabic.
Follow all production steps while working with a local print vendor as assigned. This includes after-hours work and weekends as necessary.
Clear articles for publication by submitting drafts to the Public Relations Department, Corporate Brand Management Division, Technical Services Unit, and concerned members of management up to and including the Chairman of the Board.
Select photographs and other visual elements to accompany stories and features, ensuring they meet established guidelines, as well as their technical safety message. Oversee the development of other visual projects including videography and PowerPoint presentations. Review visual elements as they relate to the publication of material, which can include working with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, and working with graphic designers.
Originate, update, and edit, in both English and Arabic, booklets and brochures as required by all Saudi Aramco departments. These include booklets on the oil industry, recruitment brochures, training materials, etc., involving consulting references, and other sources for authenticity and accuracy, and ensuring their review by subject matter experts.
Write and edit material, in both English and Arabic, used by all departments in written and audiovisual productions intended for presentation or distribution both within and outside the Saudi Aramco community. This includes editing for style and compliance with company policies on sensitive issues.
Keep informed of company and local projects and activities, and safety concerns as identified by sources to initiate articles.
Prepare correspondence to contributors, outside firms, and NYO as required.
Maintain clippings and ideas catalogue for future use.
Act as editor in the absence of the lead project editor.
Perform other miscellaneous duties as directed.
